A Bit Of Romance ...
...Wouldn't go amiss for this week's Sepia Saturday, I think, so here's a photograph of my parents on their wedding day, June 1st, 1936. Now you can see for yourself the artist who was behind the drawings I've been posting for Sepia Saturday recently, and the very hand that held the pencil!
Mum's wedding veil was eventually used to make a Christening robe for me, which was then adapted into a short dress - the sorry remnants of which I still have to this day.

What a beautiful dress.
ReplyDeleteI was trying to see if that was a rolled up sketch that your father was holding, but enlarging the photograph doesn't make it any clearer to me (with or without my specs)
A truly handsome couple, Jinksy.
ReplyDeleteThey appear to be the consummate British couple of a certain period.
ReplyDeleteAre you related, through your father, to Prince Charles?
June- are you trying to tell me my Dad's ears stuck out? LOL
ReplyDeleteI love that you posted your parents' wedding photo, Jinksy. Since you still have some remnants of the material from your mother's dress, it might be cool to see that in a photo 73 years after.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful couple, beautiful dress, beautiful memory.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful wedding photo, Jinksy...in your moms,s bouquet, I see a horseshoe shape attached to ribbons...was that the real thing for luck perhaps or something else? She wore a lovely dress.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely photograph and didn't your mother look beautiful? Your father looks so proud. Happy day:-)
ReplyDeleteNo no no! Not the ears.
ReplyDeleteIt's the slightly apologetic slant of the eyebrows that gave me a hint of Windsor. ;-)
Such a smart gentleman, and your Mom's dress is beautiful, Jinksy. The photo is very definitely reminiscent of the age.
ReplyDeleteelegant and handsome..I'm loving the 30s look. But that could be because I almost remember it!
ReplyDeleteI think Cuppa's veil was used for Thesha's bassinet.
ReplyDeleteA truly lovely wedding photo. Looks like it must have been a fancy wedding. The dress, veil, flowers, and your dad's suit look so nice. And the thought that the veil was used for you on two occasions makes it all the more special.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDelete;^)
I think it's wonderful (and amazing) that her dress was repurposed and passed along.
;^)
Beautiful photo. Didn't they have wonderful bouquets in those days?
ReplyDeleteThank you for showing us.
Must chat soon. I'm looking forward to what you have to tell me about D's birthchart.
Blessings, Star
Ahhhh.
ReplyDeleteDidn't people look sombre and formal in those days.
Perhaps they took their vows more seriously than we latterly have.
These old wedding photos look so innocent these days, don't they Jinksy? All the more poignant that it was just before the terrible war.
ReplyDeleteWhy am I not surprised you still have a piece of your mother's wedding veil?
ReplyDeleteIt is a gorgeous wedding dress. What's the horseshoe doing there? I can definitely see a family likeness with you. You can of course also be related to Hugh Grant. He too has apologetic eyebrows ;-)
The dress, the bouquet, and your mother herself - such a lovely bride. They make a lovely couple. Your father does have the look of an action hero...not Prince Charles though, much more handsome.
ReplyDeleteYour family does seem to have the loveliest wedding photos !
ReplyDeleteLovely photo, jinksy--and it is indeed great fun to see the artist whose drawing I've so enjoyed.
ReplyDeletejinksy i wonder when people pose for photographers what they're thinking: your dad appears to be thinking "is this what you want" and your mum "just do it this way!" there's goodness in your dad. steven
ReplyDeleteAhh! from both your off spring sharing their second bottle of wine and reading your post xxx
ReplyDeleteLovely photo- beautiful dress, and the flowers are exquisite!
ReplyDeleteLovely wedding photo! (You don't see too many double-breasted suits these days)
ReplyDeleteThe are a beautiful couple and you have such wonderful traditions from them.
ReplyDeleteI love old photos - anyone's old photos. Thanks for sharing this one. I think it's wonderful that your Mum (and you) got more use from the veil.
ReplyDeletecute romance.
ReplyDeleteYour parents made a handsome couple Penny. I enlarged the photo to see them better. Interesting information you gave too. - Dave
