A few weeks ago, I posted a picture of my Mum and Dad on their wedding day, 1st June 1936, and mentioned that I still had the dress which had been made (from the veil) for my Christening in 1941. Hilary from
The Smitten Image, being a lady in love with her camera, asked at once to see a photo of this relic, but as usual, I couldn't find it to order.
But this morning, as if to underline the
Discovery Of The Nighties, The Dress fell into my hands as I was looking for a jumper in my chest of drawers. I didn't find the jumper, but one can't have everything. I had to be content with The Dress, which I have now uploaded or downloaded, ready for this post. I shall definitely link it to
Sepia Saturday this week, even though today is Thursday. Blogland days have even less relevance than real world days, wouldn't you agree?
So here are the historical pictures of a very fragile Jinksy garment which is even older than it's present owner. And that's saying something.

We still have mine too. The next generations have had their pictures taken in it -- although I'm not sure mine was.

ReplyDeleteStill figuring out this WW thing and the site froze up on me two days. I finally connected with a live person but never solved anything.
Finally I, the former build a computer person, thought, I'll just reboot. Voila! everything worked. (I usually let my computer sleep, not hibernate.)
Not sure if my fault, WW fault, laptop fault, of just one of those unknown reasons computers do what the do.

Jinksy...how gorgeous is that! We ..that is the Irish family ...have a christening gown brought over in the late 1800s by the maternal family from Scotland and most of the Babes have been done in it. Although my babes were always a bit too big for it . they had 'em small in those days!!

ReplyDeleteOurs was ancient when I was christened in it . Now I too am ancient , it's definitely showing its age ( a bit like me , really) and probably will never be worn again but is guarded carefully because of the family memories .

ReplyDeletei don't even know what i was christened in or where it is. ditto with my poor kids. but yours is beautiful. i'll pass this on to my daughter who just got married and had a nice train on her dress. if she should have a child who is christened at a small size it would make a beautiful dress.

Jinksy, I really can't believe that you'd leave such a precious item in the jumble of a jumper drawer. Tut tut. It is meant to be wrapped in the finest tissue paper and kept in its own little box.
Imagine, you being that tiny and looking a picture in it, I'm sure!
