I've no idea who this represents, so leave it to your imagination! Although the second of Dad's sketches for today needs no introduction...
I apologise for the messy strip of Sellotape across the top of this scanned page. One of these days, I'll have to crop the picture and tidy up the finished result !
Both are in answer to yet another Sepia Saturday, where I'm sure you can find more treasures from the past.
A Dickens character? I mean the top one, of course.
ReplyDeleteI wondered about that, Bruce...Pickwick Papers?
ReplyDeletePen, I was just going to write Pickwick when I saw your comment!
ReplyDeleteThey're really good - the Popeye one looks a bit like me in a morning!!!
ReplyDeleteCJ xx
I was also thinking that the first guy looks Dickensian. The second guy looks true to the finish cause he eats his spinach.
ReplyDeleteI immediately thought of Mr Pickwick.
ReplyDeletemr. postlethwaite! has to be. steven
ReplyDeleteOh, you should clean them up, matte and frame them for the wall, they are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIf not out of Dickens, then it certainly ought to be. Love the juxtaposition of these two subjects, too.
ReplyDeleteThe first one sure looks familiar but cannot get a name to surface. I agree they would make wonderful art for conversation pieces hanging on your wall. Boy he was a good artist.
ReplyDeleteQMM
I agree, a character from Dickens is my bet!
ReplyDeleteI say Ditto to Dickens for the first; and no mistaking Popeye. Interesting and I would not have noticed or thought about the cellotape if not brought to our attention. Very nicely done!
ReplyDeleteThere's something about the first one that makes me think of a food label, but I don't know which one. Sort of on the tip of my tongue.
ReplyDeleteQuite fun you have saved these. Wish I had all the old Mickey Mouse drawings my dad used to do for me. I'd sit patiently watching him draw the lines and then he'd hand it to me and talk like Donald Duck.
Is Tattered and Lost thinking of Quaker Oats? The first one does bear a resemblance to the gentleman on the packet.
ReplyDeleteGreat drawings, however - goodness, what skill :-)
Nope, not Quaker Oats which has William Penn on the box. This looks more like something from an ale or beer or spirits. Definitely British, not German.
ReplyDeleteI yam sure it would be a Dicken's character!
ReplyDeleteYe, I think the first one is a Dickens character. They're both superb.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, thanks for contributing it to Sepia S. As for the first drawing, my money would go on W C Fields rather than a Dickens character.
ReplyDeleteSuch great drawings that are so full of character. I think the "cello" at the top is more authentic than a perfectly cropped image. I have no guess about the first image. The hat looks very mid 1800s, though.
ReplyDeleteThe top picture sort-of looks like Churchill d'ya think? But no doubting the second one. Good drawings by your Dad Penny - Dave
ReplyDeletePen, I love seeing Grandee's drawings here - it always brings such a smile to my face. What a dear man he was!
