Having woken up at the wonderful hour of three o'clock, the phrase 'doldrums of the night' lodged itself in my brain, and became ever more insistent. There was no hope for it, but to obey its call and come downstairs to allow it to take shape and be born into the world. But it was not satisfied. It pestered me until I had turned it into a Friday 55 for G-Man. So here it is.
3.30am
Doldrums of the night
when falling rain leads the dance;
time when no birds sing.
Silent motorway
adds occasional murmur
from speeding tyres
of night-owl drivers,
heading towards the new dawn.
They will alert larks,
birds who greet the day
and wake Morpheus from sleep
with gentle calling,
while dreamers nestle in his arms.
I love the call of the middle of the night...it's beautiful... great 55

Well you made good use of the time Jinksy! Everything is so quiet at that time of the morning - a good time to write. :)
ReplyDeleteMine's up too.
Hello Jinksy,
ReplyDeleteMaybe I should try 3am for a little poetic stimulus? But the arms of Morpheus are terribly comfortable!
That was worth getting up for!
ReplyDeleteThis was really nice. 3AM is a nice, peaceful hour!
ReplyDeleteMy 55 is here if you'd like to read.
Good poem, jinksy! I don't do the 55 words thing. I can't even say hello properly in 55 words....
ReplyDeleteShe didn't write poems, but when asked to describe the difference between writing short stories and writing a novel, Flannery O'Connor said it was like coming out of a dark wood only to find that you have been set upon by wolves....
Thanks for obeying. Nice read there Jinksy.
ReplyDeleteI love the night, I am always up
ReplyDeleteGreat 55, mine is up
That was dedication for you.
ReplyDeleteI would have wrestled in bed.
Glad you gave in to it.
Nuts in May
ooooh, Jinksy, this is really nice. You can get up in the middle of the night any time and write what is on your midnight (or later) mind. This really is one of the best.
ReplyDeleteJinksy...?
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should stay up late more often!
This was a GEM!!!
Excellent 55 My Friend..
Thank you so much for visiting, thanks for playing, and have a Happy Easter, and a Kick Ass Week-End...G

Hi Jinksy
ReplyDeletehaving woken to a rainy Saturday morning your poem was very poignant...no highway though, although the early bird surfers driving to the point breaks when it is still dark sound like a highway some mornings...
Happy days
I only want to utter profanity during a bad night.
ReplyDeleteYes, the silence of night. Very nice nocturnal poem. Have a lovely Easter.
ReplyDeletehello jinksy - the middle of the night awakening is an almost daily/nightly experience for me. i especially love it when it's raining and open the window to let in the delicious sound and smell. have a lovely day. steven
ReplyDeleteTake more naps during the day so you can write more at night.
ReplyDeleteyou should have got in touch. I was still awake at 3am, not having been able to get to sleep at all. I took 2 sleeping pills which made me very drowsy this morning.
ReplyDeleteI also tried to compose something, it's very gloomy, maybe I'll post it some time. I wonder if we should have a chat room with the fridge soup.
Hi Jinksy, I know just how you felt. I once had to do the same! S
ReplyDeleteLate reading this but I truly did enjoy, from one who seldoms sleeps, your words are comforting Jinksy.
