There's A Dent In The Cushion...

...at the centre of this Sepia Saturday gem. Bet you can't guess who made it? Meantime, I wonder how many of you will recognise the two little shipwrecked mariners?

They are none other than the younger selves of HRH Elizabeth and HRH Margaret aboard The Royal Yacht of the time. I think they were playing at being either rescued sailors, or stowaways, when they smiled so nicely for my Uncle Fred, who was a member of the yacht's crew.

And the dent? Well that was made by this much loved lady...

I love the fact that they were kind enough to allow the photos to be taken, even posing with special smiles for no one but my uncle...

But maybe the best snap he captured was this one of father and daughter taking an early morning jog around deck. No wonder the little girl is still hale and hearty in her eighties. Long may she reign.

  9. Hello Jinksy,

I could recognise HM but wouldn't have got Margaret! These really are wonderful mementoes to have. Well done Uncle Fred!

  10. I recognized Queen Elizabeth II immediately; she still looks the same! And I also recognized George VI and his Elizabeth in their younger days. Margaret I would not have got at all except that she was near, and slightly younger than, her sister.

    Great post, Jinksy!

  11. P.S. - Do you know the year these photos were made? My guess is that they were made in 1936 or before 1936, when either Edward VIII or George V was king and Prince Albert's family just happened to be along on the yacht on holilday. Can't imagine that much informality allowed, even to a crew member of the royal yacht, after Albert became George VI. Or maybe I'm wrong.

Do you remember Crawfie's book, The Little Princesses?

What special photos these are, not many people will have pictures like these to look back at.
Don't you think old photos are much more interesting than those we take today in all their colorfulness?

  27. Wow, what a slice of history to have in your possession. I bet your uncle could tell some really interesting stories about that yacht. Why do I have such a hard time writing that word, YACHT, it just doesn't feel right, LOL. Great photos, and story, keep them close to hand and don't let anyone squirrel them away from you.

  33. before even starting to read your post, as soon as i saw the first pic, i thought of lilibeth. funny to see i was right. such candid photos!! nice to have. it's nice to see she had a childhood of some sort as her adult life was thwarted by a crown arriving so soon, removing any sense of normalcy.
